Albany is located on the Hudson River, making it a center for transportation. The Empire State Plaza was constructed in midtown Albany from 1965 and 1978, which forced the demolition of several historical neighborhoods. Most of the city's population is employed by state departments. Albany is home to the popular performing arts center "The Egg", which is located in the Empire State Plaza.
