• Albany is the capital of New York State and located 136 miles north of New York City. It was founded in 1614 and is the fourth oldest city in the United States. Albany is located on the Hudson River, making it a center for transportation. The Empire State Plaza was constructed in midtown Albany from 1965 and 1978, which forced the demolition of several historical neighborhoods. Most of the city's population is employed by state departments. Albany is home to the popular performing arts center "The Egg", which is located in the Empire State Plaza. The New York State Museum is a popular tourist attraction located on Madison Avenue. The museum features fine arts and New York's natural history.
