• About Alabama A&M University

  Alabama A&M University is a land-grant university which receives its support from Alabama federal funds. The university was established in 1875 after a bill was passed in the State Legislature which first opened the school as Huntsville Normal School. When it first opened, the school had only 61 students. The concept for the school was industrialized education, and was soon changed to the State Normal and Industrial School at Huntsville. By 1891, the school received a grant to further focus on agriculture and mechanical arts and the name was changed for a third time to The State Agricultural and Mechanical College for Negroes. The location was moved to Normal, Alabama and officially became a junior college in 1919. It wasn't until the 1940s, that the first graduating class received their bachelor's degrees and by 1948 the university was changed to its present name.Alabama A&M University: About AAMU
