  • Life and Acting Career

    Pacino was raised in the South Bronx by his mother. His parents divorced when he was 2, and his father moved to California. From a young age Pacino displayed a natural interest and ability in the field of acting and after finishing high school, he went on to study with the famous acting teacher, Lee Strasberg.

    Pacino performed in a number of New York plays during the 1960s, but his first big entrance into film came when Francis Ford Coppola cast him as Michael Corleone in The Godfather (1972). Shortly after The Godfather, he appeared in Serpico as the title character, Frank Serpico. Both films were huge successes that launched Pacino's career. The success of these two films was later matched when Pacino took the role of Tony Montana in 1983's Scarface and then again in the 1992 film Scent of a Woman, for which Pacino received an Academy Award.

    In 2003, Pacino portrayed the character of Roy Cohn in HBO's Angels in America, which earned him an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Male Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie.
