  • About Adelphi University

Adelphi University first held classes in Brooklyn with an original enrollment of 57 students as part of the Adelphi Academy. What was once considered a small private preparatory school in 1863, became a two and three year college by 1893. The school transitioned again in 1896, as Charles H. Levermore stepped in to head the academy and realized that there should be two separate schools, an academy and a college. Beginning in 1912, the college only served women and in 1929 settled on its Garden City campus. After World War II, the college became co-educational, but it wasn't until 1963 that the college gained university status.Adelphi University: The Adelphi Story
