Deep Throat
The identity of the Woodward and Bernstein's informant was a secret until 2005. Felt's daughter reportedly was the one to convince him to go public with the information that he had been the source of the Deep Throat leaks. The revelation was made by the family lawyer in an article in Vanity Fair. Woodward and Bernstein had promised not to reveal the identity of Deep Throat until after his death.Reuters: Watergate 'Deep Throat' Mark Felt Dies at 95 (December 19, 2008) YouTube Video: Mark Felk, Aka "Deep Throat" Dead at 95 (Time: 1:50)Watergate Scandal
The June 17, 1972 arrest of five men who broke into the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Washington D.C. Watergate complex led to a series of political scandals and the resignation of Richard Nixon in August 1974.Investigations into the break-in eventually revealed the secretive surveillance activities of the Nixon administration. After the release of the Pentagon Papers, detailing governmental strategies and cover-ups concerning the War in Vietnam, Nixon had become concerned with preventing leaks of classified information to the press. In response, he set up a special department to conduct political surveillance. The members of the department, called "plumbers," worked out of The White House, and were paid through a campaign slush fund. A number of the plumbers would eventually be convicted for participating in political sabotage; some served time in prison.

""He didn't leak. He had to really be squeezed...He confirmed mostly what we had gotten elsewhere. He didn't want to volunteer a lot of information, yet his role was essential in giving us a solidity and a knowledge that what we were reporting was right."—Carl BernsteinCNN: W.
