Physiology of Vomiting
Vomiting is an automatic reflex reaction that is initiated by the brain in response to chemicals in the blood or impulses from the nervous system. The brain signals the muscles of the abdomen to contract, forcing the contents of the stomach into the esophagus and out through the mouth. In some cases, the emptying of the stomach is preceded by contractions of the small intestines which transfer the contents of the intestines into the stomach before they are vomited out.Colorado State University: Physiology of Vomiting Knowledgerush: Emetology
