Volkswagen Super Bowl Ad

Auto manufacturer Volkswagen aired two ads during Super Bowl XLV on February 6, 2011. The first commercial features a pint-sized Darth Vader who is attempting to use the force, despite his best abilities. Volkswagen released the ad prior to the game, creating heavy rotation and receiving more than 10.8 million hits and counting. The commercial promotes the 2012 Passat that finally evokes the power of the force to the surprise of Vader.  The ad is courtesy of the ad agency Deutsch LA.

The second ad, titled "Black Beetle," features advanced computer-generated animation to place a Volkswagen Beetle in a lush, colorful, microscopic setting.

Super Bowl commercials are a thriving business that cost advertisers anywhere from $2.5-$3 million  for 30 seconds of air time. Cars advertisers told U.S.A Today that $3 million is a bargain for the hundreds of thousands of viewers expected to watch. Six car advertisers are expected to air commercials for nine different brands.http://content.usatoday.com/communities/driveon/post/2011/02/carmakers-say-3-million-super-bowl-ads-are-bargains/1

2011 Volkswagen Super Bowl Ad

Volkswagen's Super Bowl XLV commercial aired on February 6, 2011 and featured a child dressed as Darth Vader.  The child attempted to use the force to move a variety of objects including a washing machine, a doll and even the family dog.

The extended one minute long commercial shows additional objects that Vader tries to move including a sandwich on a plate.  The sandwich does move, but only as a result of the child's mother pushing it toward the child.  In all versions of the clip, the child finally has success while standing in front of a 2012 Volkswagen Passat, though the father may have also played a role.c
