Dr. Vojislav Kostunica is the current Prime Minister of Serbia and former President of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Sworn into his second term as Prime Minister in May 2007, Kostunica is considered to be an ardent nationalist, who has demanded that the United States rescind its recognition of Kosovo.
Background
A law graduate of the University of Belgrade, Kostunica began his political career in 1989 as one of the founders of the Democratic Party of Serbia. As a conservative politician with no connection to the old Communist Party, Kostunica won the support of both nationalistic and pro-Western voters in 2000 in what would be the last Yugoslavian presidential election. He would assume the office of Serbian Prime Minister in 2004.
Kostunica on Kosovo
In contrast to Serbian president Boris Tadic, Kostunica opposes closers ties with the European Union and the United Nations because of their support of Kosovo's independence from Serbia.
