Some of the families of the 32 victims that were killed in the
Virginia Tech shooting that occurred on April 16, 2007 reported that the state of
Virginia has
offered $100,000 for each family, with additional medical and counseling benefits. Governor
Timothy Kaine has said that while his office is engaged in "productive" discussions with the families, no settlement has been reached, and there is nothing to announce. The families of at least 7 victims are represented by the
Washington, DC firm of Bode & Grenier, who has stated they will not be filing a class action lawsuit, but will be pursuing individual wrongful death claims if a settlement is not reached.
Update: On April 10, 2008, lawyers for the victim's families announced that they had reached an $11 million settlement with the state. Details on how the settlement will be distributed were not released.
