The Virginia Tech Hokies football team represents the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in college football at the Division I, or Football Bowl Subdivision level. They play in the Coastal Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference, having joined the ACC in 2004 after spending the previous dozen years playing in the Big East Conference.http://www.nationalchamps.net/NCAA/database/virginiatech_database.htm
The Hokies are coached by Frank Beamer who has been the coach at the school since 1987. He is tied for the second most wins by an active coach in college football along with Ohio State's Jim Tressel, with the only man in front of them Penn State's Joe Paterno.
The Hokies play home games at Lane Stadium, considered one of the loudest stadiums in the country and recognized in 2005 by Rivals.com as having the best home-field advantage in the country.http://www.rivals.com/content.asp?SID=1014&CID=444097
The program has grown into one of the premier programs in the country over the last 20 years, under the direction of head coach Frank Beamer. Under Beamer's leadership, the Hokies have appeared in 17 consecutive bowl games, the third longest streak in the country, trailing Florida and Florida State. They've also won five conference championships during that time, including three in the Big East Conference, and three more ACC Championships. The Hokies played in the 2000 BCS Championship Game at the Sugar Bowl, losing to current conference rival Florida State.http://www.nationalchamps.net/NCAA/database/virginiatech_database.htm
Two Hokie players have selected first overall in the NFL Draft. Bruce Smith was selected by the Buffalo Bills first overall in 1985 and Michael Vick was selected first by the Atlanta Falcons in 2001. Other well known Virginia Tech players include Corey Moore, Carroll Dale, Antonio Freeman, DeAngelo Hall, Kevin Jones and Don Strock.
2010 Virginia Tech Hokies Football Preview
The Hokies look to continue their trend of success in 2010 as they try to build on their 10-3 mark from a year ago. The team returns a dozen starters from that team, eight on offense, but just four on defense. One, running back Ryan Williams, was an All ACC selection last season as a freshman. The offense will also have Tyrod Taylor back at quarterback, and he has been a starter the past three seasons.
The team will have to fill some holes on defense, as three fourths of the defensive secondary from the number one pass defense in the nation from a year ago have moved on. In addition, both specialists, who were first team All ACC selections, have graduated as well, meaning there will be replacements in the kicking game for Coach Beamer.http://www.nationalchamps.net/2010/earlybird/teams/virginiatech.htm
