Virignia is one of the original 13 colonies and was the birthplace of four of the first five U.S. presidents. Virginia joined the Union in June 1788. Virgnia has a rich political history when it comes to voting and political parties.http://www.270towin.com/states/Virginia
In 1972, Virginia controlled 15.9% of all electoral votes. It was the largest concentration of votes in United States history. However, the commonwealth did not participate in the 1864 and 1868 elections due to secession. From the post Civil War Reconstruction period through 1948, the state of Virginia was reliably a "blue" state. Then from 1952 to 2004, the state voted mostly Republican with the exception of Lyndon Johnson in 1964. The political party switch was mainly attributed to the Democratic control brought on by Senator Harry F. Byrd. Then in 2008, a change in demographics put the political parties back into play. Barack Obama won over John McCain by 53% to 46%. Some theorists believe that Virginia will be the "swing state to watch" in the 2012 election.http://www.270towin.com/states/Virginia
