    Virginia Commonwealth University can be traced back to Hampton-Sydney College, which was founded in 1838. Hampton-Sydney College became the Medical College of Virginia in 1954. Virginia Commonwealth University was officially formed in 1968, when the Medical College of Virginia merged with the Richmond Professional Institute.
