Vioxx is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that was used to relieve the symptoms associated with ailments such as arthritis, menstrual cramps, and migraine headaches. However, Merck announced a voluntary withdrawal of Vioxx in 2004 due to its risk of heart attack and stroke.
The controversy over Vioxx continues today. Merck withheld information regarding the hazards of the drug, and continued to preform clinical trials even after problems caused by Vioxx emerged. This was followed by a misrepresentation of the side effects published in clinical trials. In addition, as of April 2008, documents have shown that Merck actually paid well accredited academics to put their name on medical journals written by the pharmaceutical company.
