Since the founding of the National Hockey League in 1917, teams have worn a variety of jerseys, or sweaters, throughout the years. Vintage, or throwback, jerseys have become a favorite item for hockey fans and collectors.
Bringing Back the Past
Current NHL teams have worn vintage jerseys for special occasion games over the past few years. In 2003, the Montreal Canadiens and the Edmonton Oilers sported vintage jerseys at the Heritage Classic, the first-ever outdoor NHL game. Classic jerseys were also used at the 2008 NHL Winter Classic, where the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Buffalo Sabres at Ralph Wilson Stadium. It is speculated that the vintage jersey tradition will continue for the 2009 Winter Classic, where the Chicago Blackhawks will host Detroit Red Wings at Wrigley Field on January 1, 2009.Puck Daddy (Yahoo!): Which vintage jerseys should Detroit, Chicago wear...
