This page is a fully written walkthrough for the 2008 action/adventure Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Viking: Battle for Asgard. Directly below the walkthrough, you'll find a collection of Walkthrough, Guide and FAQ resources for the game from all the best video game sites on the web. In Viking: Battle for Asgard, you control Skarin, a viking warrior, chosen by the goddess Freya to defend the future of mankind. Once chosen, the great battle for Asgard begins.
Gameplay
Explore the three islands in Midgard to find and rescue viking soldiers, who may then assist you in battle. Attack and capture castles. Once your mission is completed on each island, you must then take part in a siege or a great battle between large armies with hundreds of soldiers fighting to the death. Your enemies may be weakened by killing their shaman, or using various combat moves to kill the soldiers themselves.-
Brighthelm
- YouTube: Viking: Battle for Asgard Playthrough 1 (Time: 8:24)
- Cutscene: Skarin is mortally wounded in battle against Hel's Legion. The goddess Freya appears, heals Skarin, and enlists him as her champion against Hel's army. In addition, she grants him the Brisingamen amulet and rids Brighthelm of its attackers.
- TIP: The Brisingamen acts as your radar and map. Enemies appear as red dots, friends as green, and treasure and other items as yellow dots. To mark a waypoint, move the cursor over the area of the map you want to travel to. Set a waypoint (X). When you return to the game screen, your destination will be marked on the Brisingamen in the upper right of the screen.
- TIP: People you should talk to are marked on the Brisingamen in green. On the game screen, they are marked with an exclamation point above them. Each one you speak to holds useful information or adds new locations to explore on your map.
- TIP: Search everywhere! It's a little known historical fact that the ancient Norse used to leave bags of gold laying in any old place: behind a hut, in the middle of the woods, around an abandoned farm. Find that gold and use it to buy needed supplies!
- TIP: Notable locations in Brighthelm: Torv runs the local mead hall in Brighthelm and will pay you well for any barrels of mead you may happen to find on your travels. The Blacksmith's shop is the place to visit to upgrade your weapons with the power of the elements!
- From the Leystones where you appear, follow the path down the hill to speak to Shaman Asta. She will reveal the larger goal of restoring the Dragon's amulet. For now, she suggests you go talk to Chieftain Halal at the northern wall of Brighthelm.
- Chieftain Halal tells you to free as many of your kinsmen as you can to add to your army. He suggests that you start at Hilltop Farm, where the Legion have taken over and are holding some of your men as prisoners.
- If you speak to the guard on the wall behind Halal, he will inform you that the Legion have left some of your Vikings to die on the beach just north of Brighthelm. Free them and add them to your army!
- Scour the beach to the northeast and west. You'll find a barrel of mead and a band of Vikings tied up in the shallows at each end. Stand next to the stake and tap B to free them. Be sure to search the grounded long-ships, as there are bags of gold near them.
- Those two barrels of mead should earn you enough to buy at least one rune for your weapons.
Hilltop Farm
- YouTube: Viking: Battle for Asgard Playthrough 2 (Time: 8:32)
- Take the road east out of Brighthelm.
- You will encounter your first Legion warriors here. You can take them out without much trouble; just remember to grab the red orbs they leave behind when they die. Each orb increases your power meter, which fuels your elemental rune attacks.
- Take the path branching off to the left.
- TIP: Skarin automatically goes into a stealth crouch when he senses enemies nearby. Pay attention to his stance and use the element of surprise to take out your foes.
- If you follow this path, there's a small cave with three or four Legion warriors guarding some of your Vikings and gold. Or take the next path leading to the left to get to Hilltop Farm.
- As you get closer to the farm, you will activate the Leystone, there. Check the slope to the right of the path. There are three more undead Vikings, but also gold and mead.
- Though you may want to charge straight into Hilltop Farm to liberate your friends and slaughter the Legion filth, it helps to sneak around the perimeter and slowly cut down their numbers with stealth. If you really want to go for the frontal assault, head for the cage holding your warriors and try to get it open. They will fight on your side if freed!
- Be sure to check out the windmill on the cliff. A Legion archer and a couple warriors guard it, but there's also a large amount of gold scattered about.
- Once Hilltop Farm has been liberated, talk to Tait the Miller. He will ask you to retrieve his stolen cargo and take it to Osgood the Shopkeeper in Brighthelm. Tait also recommends you ask Osgood about your father's stolen Battle Horn.
Lost Cargo
- YouTube: Viking: Battle for Asgard Playthrough 3 (Time: 8:43)
- Set your waypoint on the Brisingamen map and find Tait's stolen goods.
- TIP: Mercy is for the weak! Be as brutal as you can when taking the Legion apart. A string of fast attacks followed by a finishing move (hold X) will grant you more power orbs than a quick kill!
- Kill the Legion soldiers guarding the cargo.
- Take the cargo to Osgood in Brighthelm.
- Osgood will now sell supplies, upgrades, and maps to you.
- He also tells you the location of your father's Battle Horn. The Legion Champion to the north has it. You can't assault the Legion at the Gorge until you have the horn, and have freed enough Vikings.
- Go to the Ancient Ruins to free the last clan of Vikings you need before storming the Gorge. You can also obtain the first Dragon Summoning Gem there.
- TIP: Don't forget to upgrade your weapons and stats! You will need them in the coming battles.
- TIP: Buy the treasure maps that Osgood sells. There are three versions that show the locations of gold bags, urns, and chests on the Brisingamen amulet.
Ancient Ruins
- YouTube: Viking: Battle for Asgard Playthrough 4 (Time: 9:06)
- Take the east gate out of Brighthelm.
- Take the bridge to the right. There is an urn full of gold beneath it.
- TIP: In this level, Skarin will have to leap (Y) and climb (Y again). Some leaps are hard to gauge, so use the camera angle (R stick) to get a better view.
- Just past the bridge is a cave with three Legion guards and several bags of gold.
- Once again, take your time and stalk your enemies. There's a larger number of the Legion here, so take the opportunity to build up your power meter.
- Once you liberate the Ancient Ruins and free the Vikings there, talk to Warrior Cadby. He asks you to find Havelok, another warrior who has mysteriously disappeared. Once you find out what happened to him, Cadby and his men will join your army. He also tells you of the Battle Arena, where you can learn new combat moves.
- Freya will also contact you, letting you know that you can summon dragons in this location later on.
- Scale the ruins to find more gold and the first of the three Dragon Summoning Stone, Hugin, at the top.
Battle Arena
- On the beach to the northeast of the Ancient Ruins, you'll find the Battle arena, as well as an urn of gold and a barrel of mead.
- Walk to the center of the arena to summon dead warriors who will teach you their battle skills.
- Even in death, Vikings still love their gold so be prepared to pay for the knowledge they teach you.
- Tune yourself up to be a Viking war machine! You're going to need those moves.
- After buying Thor's Hammer or one of the other rage attacks, you will now receive Rage Crystals when you kill an enemy. These crystals fuel the powerful rage moves you learn.
Warrior Havelock
- YouTube: Viking: Battle for Asgard Playthrough 5 (Time: 8:36)
- Further to the northeast is the last place anyone saw Havelock before the Legion attack. Travel there to find out what happened.
- It seems Havelock has fallen to Hel's temptations and switched sides. Fight your way through his minions using your new battle skills.
- TIP: There are three Legion Archers on the dock above the beach that make things very difficult. It's a good idea to climb up there and take care of them first.
- When you get to Havelock, don't let up. Unleash your rage attacks on him and don't give him a chance to fight back.
- Take Havelock's helmet back to Cadby. He and his men will join your army.
- By now, you should have enough men to assault the Gorge. The only thing that remains is to retrieve your father's Battle Horn from Hel's Champion.
- TIP: If you haven't started using the Leystones to travel by now, you might want to give it a try. Teleporting is much easier than running everywhere.
Hel's Champion
- No matter how you get to him, you're in for a fight. The Champion and his bodyguard are patrolling the roadway just below the Gorge. There's not much opportunity for stealth tactics.
- Nail the Champion with your elemental powers to weaken him and chase him down when he runs. Just continue to beat on him until the fatality mini-game begins.
- Follow the button combo's and repeat the dodge if you have to until you slaughter him. Then you can concentrate on any remaining Legion warriors. After you kill the Champion, you can claim your father's Battle Horn and the Skirmish Key.
- Achievement Unlocked: Champion of Champions
- Go to your map, select the Gorge, and press A when you are ready to begin the battle.
The Gorge
- YouTube: Viking: Battle for Asgard Playthrough 6 (Time: 5:51)
- Cutscene: Your army assembles for the fight!
- Wade in with your men and attack. Any elemental runes you activate will be granted to your allies as well, so be sure to keep collecting the power orbs.
- Cave Gorge Army Leader Arnulf tells you that his men fear whatever lies within the caves of the Gorge. You must enter the caves to find a way to lower the drawbridge to the rest of the Isle.
The Clifftop Path
- YouTube: Viking: Battle for Asgard Playthrough 7 (Time: 8:01)
- Use the Skirmish Key to unlock the gate leading to the tunnel.
- Watch for Legion warriors lurking in the dark.
- Follow the passage to the cliff and fight your way across the rope bridge. There are more Legion archers here.
- Make your way up the hill. When you come to the small ruined bridge, drop down. There are two bags of gold, as well as a Legion scrub hiding in the bushes.
- Keep going up the mountain. You will discover the Clifftop Path Leystone.
- Nearby are more archers and Legion soldiers, so move quickly across the rope bridge.
- Knock the warriors off the bridge if you're having trouble.
- Follow the path to the Cave.
The Cave
- YouTube: Viking: Battle for Asgard Playthrough 8 (Time: 8:12)
- There are two Legion Shield warriors up here with other warriors as back up. Take them out, one at a time.
- Follow the winding path in the Cave, using stealth to sneak up on your enemies.
- Climb down to the lower level of the Cave.
- Cutscene: Hel's influence.
- Watch out for the Assassin, he's extremely quick. Wind up with a power attack and wait for him to come to you.
- Achievement Unlocked: Assassin of Assassins
Encampment
- As you leave the Cave, be aware of the Horn Blower at the base of the hill. If he spots you and sounds his horn, it will summon more enemies. Fenrir's Bite comes in very handy when dealing with these guys.
- There is another large group of Vikings being held captive here. Free them and they will join your army.
The Drawbridge
- Head toward the Drawbridge and you will discover the Drawbridge Leystone.
- As you move towards the Drawbridge, there is a cave on the right with three Legion warriors and gold within.
- Follow the path to the left, to the ruined wall and leap across to the Drawbridge gatehouse.
- Carefully make your way around the gatehouse to the walkway. Stealth kill the archer patrolling there.
- Drop down to the ground below the walkway and keep an eye out for patrolling guards.
- Follow the spiked fence to the damaged section and climb over. Take out the guards there.
- Enter the gatehouse and kill the sleeping guards. Get the gold in the chest.
- Back out in the courtyard, climb the vines to the roof of the gatehouse.
- Kill the archers and go across the plank to the other roof.
- Drop down through the hole in the roof. Grab the bags of gold, and then drop down through the hole in the floor, into the room below.
- Kill the Shield guards and turn the gears to lower the Drawbridge.
- Pull the bar and open the door.
- Your army can accompany you to the Northern Isle and Darkwater.
- Just to the west of the Drawbridge is another cave with an archer and more gold.
The Quarry
- YouTube: Viking: Battle for Asgard Playthrough 9 (Time: 9:47)
- YouTube: Viking: Battle for Asgard Playthrough 10 (Time: 9:27)
- You need four more Viking clans before you can assault Darkwater.
- Head for the Quarry on the Northern Isle.
- Along the road, there is a small house on the left, guarded by two Legion Vikings. There is a bag of gold in the yard.
- Continue along the road until you reach the fork and activate the Quarry Leystone.
- Take the left path to reach the Quarry. Take out the sentry at the gate.
- There are many opportunities for stealth kills as you make your way down the cart path to the bottom of the Quarry.
- The floor of the Quarry is littered with gold. Be sure to look around as you dispatch the Legion soldiers patrolling down there.
- Make your way across the Quarry floor to the cage holding the Viking clan and free them.
- Achievement Unlocked: Niflberg Supplies Acquired
- Talk to Quarry Master Kell, who will tell you that you need to ambush the Elite Legion Patrol in the area before he and his men will join you. He will also give you the Explosive.
The Shipwreck
- If you follow the Quarry cart path the whole way around, it will lead you back to the surface. Just over the hill is a Viking shipwreck guarded by the Legion.
- At the far end of the beach opposite the Shipwreck, is a band of Vikings being held prisoner.
- Kill the Legion guards and open the chest to get the Medical Supplies.
Legion Encampment 2
- YouTube: Viking: Battle for Asgard Playthrough 11 (Time: 9:30)
- On the eastern peninsula of the North Isle, near the Darkwater Leystone, is yet another Legion Encampment holding Vikings prisoner.
- Half the camp is asleep, but be sure to take out the Horn Blower and two guards patrolling the water's edge first. Then you can slay the rest as they slumber.
- Follow the beach past the Legion markers. There is a barrel of mead at the far end.
- Take the path up the cliff to find an urn and two bags of gold.
Monastery Cave
- Near the Shipwreck is a gated cave. Use Kell's explosive to blow the gate open.
- Watch your step as you make your way through. There's gold to be found, but also pitfalls and Legion.
- You'll encounter Warrior Ingemar. He and his men are wounded and require the Medical Supplies to heal and join your army.
- Free the men and take out the remaining Legion!
Cave
- As you exit the Monastery Cave, your map will reveal another Cave, where the Legion are holding more Vikings captive.
- Free the men. On the slope behind the cave is another band of prisoners. Free them and you will have enough men to assault Darkwater! All that remains is to find the Dragon Amulet at the Monastery.
The Monastery
- YouTube: Viking: Battle for Asgard Playthrough 12 (Time: 8:41)
- YouTube: Viking: Battle for Asgard Playthrough 13 (Time: 5:22)
- Set your waypoint on the Monastery and make your way there.
- Cutscene: Asgard Vision
- Watch out for the Legion hidden in the mists. Use cover to lure them in.
- As you enter the Monastery grounds, beware of Horn Blowers and Archers in the Legion camps.
- Follow the road to the Monastery Leystone.
- Take out the sentries and the Archers guarding the entrance.
- Inside the courtyard is a small encampment of the Legion with a Horn Blower. There are also two band of Vikings held prisoner. Be sure to search the alcoves for gold!
- Go through the arch in the far left corner of the courtyard and go up the stairs to the hall.
- Chase the Shaman and kill the Legion warriors he summons. As you pursue him you'll have to leap and climb obstacles.
- Kill the Assassin, head to the top of the monastery.
- Here, you'll encounter a tougher Legion warrior with his bodyguards. He's heavily armored, so Baldur's Curse is a good opening move.
- To the left is the Interior Monastery Leystone.
- In the main room, open the portcullis.
- Cutscene: Another Champion of Hel and his retinue guard the area while the Shaman slips away.
- Fight your way down the stairs to the Vikings tied up there and free them! They'll take care of the Legion warriors so you can concentrate on the Champion. Be sure to activate an elemental rune to power up both you and your allies. Just keep on the Champion until he lodges his blade in the ground. The button sequence is longer, this time.
- After you kill the Champion, you acquire the Ancient Key.
- There are two more bands of Vikings to free at the far end of the room, and on the opposite flight of stairs.
- Use the key to open the doors.
- To kill the Shaman, destroy his power totems while fighting off the Legion that he summons. Once all of his totems are destroyed, you can finish him off (X).
- You'll get the Dragon Amulet, but Freya tells you that the amulet needs to be empowered at the Darkwarter Portal so that it may receive the other two Gems.
Darkwater Portal
- YouTube: Viking: Battle for Asgard Playthrough 14 (Time: 9:56)
- TIP: There are twelve Red Skulls hidden throughout the game. They are only accessible in the infiltration stages of each level. Try to find the Skulls in each infiltration location before you launch your final assault on it.
- Sneak around the back of the Darkwater encampment until you come to the covered section of wall. Rescue the Vikings tied up close by. Climb over the fence and into the compound. Directly behind the encampment is a beach where the Legion have landed their longboats. There are two barrels of mead here.
- Carefully make your way through the encampment. The slightest screw up will bring hordes of Legion down on you. You must try and get to the Darkwater Portal.
- Once you make it to the center of the portal, tap B to empower the Dragon Amulet. If you are successful, Freya will tell you to take the Amulet back to the Ancient Ruins to summon a Dragon.
- Achievement Unlocked: Dragon
- Get out of the encampment.
Assault on Darkwater
- TIP: Don't forget to go back to Brighthelm to unload any mead you may have found to buy more supplies and upgrades.
- TIP: Need a boost of health? Use your Lightning Rune special attack (X + A) to siphon the health from an enemy to you.
- Return to the Ancient Ruins. Climb up the Dragon Summoning Stone and tap B to summon the Dragon.
- Cutscene: Ari the Dragon
- Achievement Unlocked: Dragon Summoner
- You should now be ready to assault Darkwater.
- Select Darkwater on your map. Press A to start the siege.
- Cutscene: Preparing for war.
- Take out the Shaman and you will receive a Dragon Rune as the Legion retreats into the encampment. You need Dragon Runes for the Dragon to attack targets.
- Hit Select to view the Eye of Asgard and select the targets for your Dragon's attacks.
- TIP: Collect as much gold as you can to accomplish the objectives. Once this battle is over, you can't go back to reclaim the treasure.
- Take out the two Shamans and the unit of Archers to conquer the encampment, and then prepare to face Drakan, the Leader of Hel's army in Midgard.
- Dodge his sword blows and land as many hits as you can until the fatality button combos start. And, just when you think you've got him...
- Cutscene: Hel shows up and snatches Drakan after arguing with Freya. Freya tells you to pursue Hel to the island of Galcliff.
- YouTube: Viking: Battle for Asgard Playthrough 15 (Time: 5:04)
Galcliff Landing Camp
- YouTube: Viking: Battle for Asgard Playthrough 16 (Time: 9:19)
- Cutscene: Freya tells you about Galcliff, and asks that you gather an army to take back Holdenfort.
- TIP: The shop here has upgraded weapons and supplies. The items are also more expensive! In addition, the Blacksmith has more powerful runes for you to buy.
- Talk to Champion Jarl. He tells you to liberate the Quarry and Farm as well as keep an eye out for a missing scout party.
- This island is a bit more open ended that the last. You can tackle specific locations depending on what you want to do first. For example, if you want to make the Fire Pots available at the shop, liberate the Distillery. If you want to start producing explosives, liberate the Quarry, etc.
West Camp
- YouTube: Viking: Battle for Asgard Playthrough 17 (Time: 9:05)
- Just Southwest of the Landing Camp is a Legion camp imprisoning Vikings you can free.
- You know what to do. Just be careful, the Legion on this new island are tougher than the last.
- TIP: By now you shouldn't be having any problem with the small encampments and freeing the Vikings held captive there. Just be sure to search the vicinity of any major objective (the Distillery, Quarry, etc.) to locate more caves and camps and free your men!
Distillery
- YouTube: Viking: Battle for Asgard Playthrough 18 (Time: 9:59)
- As you approach the Distillery, you'll find the Leystone. Watch out for roving patrols.
- Sneak into the compound and free your men! Take out the Legion operating the camp and prepare to ambush the patrol coming in. Wait for them to get inside the camp and spring your trap!
- Talk to Distiller Njal. He tells you to go to his father's house to find the old man's secret recipe for flame pots. Njal gives you the key to the basement.
Ruins
- YouTube: Viking: Battle for Asgard Playthrough 19 (Time: 9:14)
- Njal's father's house is just southeast of the Galcliff Camp.
- Climb the hill and execute the Legion soldiers occupying the house.
- Drop down into the basement and unlock the door.
- Watch out for the Assassin lurking beyond. Climb down in the sub-basement.
- Grab the gold and open the chest to get the Recipe. Take the Recipe back to Njal.
- Njal will give your three flame pots and make them available at the shop in the Galcliff Camp. He and his men will also join your army.
Cave Camp
- YouTube: Viking: Battle for Asgard Playthrough 20 (Time: 8:37)
- Once you liberate the Vikings here, Warrior Hrut demands that you bring him a Legion Insignia before he and his men will join you.
- You must journey to the Central Cave and claim the Insignia from the Champion there.
Central Cave
- Enter the tunnels behind the Cave Camp and watch for the Legion patrolling within.
- As you enter the main chamber, climb up to the highest level. The Champion awaits you at the end of the walkway.
- Wear him down and avoid his blade until the fatality sequence starts. Once you have defeated him, claim his insignia!
- Make your way back out of the Central Cave and return to the Cave Camp.
- Take the Insignia back to Hrut and he will join your army!
- There are also captive Vikings being held in these caverns. Search the passage beneath the area where you fought the Champion to find them and the Cave Leystone.
Mercenaries
- Travel to the mercenary camp to talk to Mani, their leader. You can pick up a cask of Galcliff Mead on the way.
- Mani tells you that his men will only join your army for profit. He wants you to ambush a patrol carrying loot at Upsala Bridge.
- First you must get Distiller Njal's men to join your army, and you must also clear the Southern Watchtower.
Watchtower
- Watch out for the patrol on the road to the Watchtower, and keep your eyes open for any Vikings you can liberate.
- Activate the Sutherine Leystone as you approach the Watchtower.
- The front door of the tower is locked. Go around the back to kill the guard and get the key.
- Enter the tower and kill the guards. Climb up the series of ladders in the left corner. Take out the Archers and open the side door. Climb the net outside to the next level.
- Take out the Legion Archers and climb the stairs up. Climb the last ladder to the roof and take out the Shaman and final Archers.
- If Distiller Njal and his men have joined your army, you are ready to ambush the patrol! If not, go back and complete the Distillery mission.
Ambush 2
- YouTube: Viking: Battle for Asgard Playthrough 21 (Time: 9:43)
- Select the Ambush mission on your map and press A to begin.
- Cutscene: Ambush
- Lend your men the power of your elemental runes and you shouldn't have much trouble with this one.
- You will receive the War Chest. Take it back to Mani and his mercenaries will join your army.
Eastern Cave
- YouTube: Viking: Battle for Asgard Playthrough 22 (Time: 9:24)
- TIP: On the way to the Eastern Cave, at the top of the hill just outside the Quarry, you'll find a band of Vikings held prisoner by some of the Legion. Free them to add reinforcements to your army.
- You'll encounter the Champion on the road to the Cave. He's nothing special. Just dodge his attacks and lay into him until the fatality sequence starts. You'll win a Rusty Key after you beat him.
- Open the gate the Champion was guarding. Cross the bridge and climb around the walkway to the left.
- Sneak towards the Archers on the ledge. Take them out and make your way down to the floor of the cave. Take out the remaining Legion and free the workers!
- Follow the Vikings to the double doors and open them. Return to the Quarry to speak to Olen. He will give you the Explosives.
Plateau Camp
- YouTube: Viking: Battle for Asgard Playthrough 23 (Time: 10:01)
- YouTube: Viking: Battle for Asgard Playthrough 24 (Time: 9:30)
- YouTube: Viking: Battle for Asgard Playthrough 25 (Time: 9:53)
- YouTube: Viking: Battle for Asgard Playthrough 26 (Time: 5:50)
- TIP: On your way to the Plateau Camp to the east of the Galcliff Camp, you will come across the Dragon Summoning Stone for this island.
- Follow the mountain around until you reach the second entrance to the Central Cave. If you haven't freed the Vikings here yet, this would be a good time.
- Follow the Vikings to the Cave Leystone; go past it to the stone bridge where the Archer is patrolling. At the end is a gate that must be destroyed with explosives.
- Get an explosive charge from Olen at the Quarry if you haven't already.
- Plant the charge at the gate (tap B).
- Cutscene: The bomb blows the gate up.
- Activate the Flatturgrunnur Leystone as you near the camp.
- TIP: There's a cave just past the Leystone with some gold guarded by the Legion in it.
- Free the warriors here, and you're ready to move on.
