A video game emulator is a piece of software that enables you to run video games on platforms for which they were not originally intended. These emulators first began to appear in the mid-1990s, when common personal computers had become powerful enough to easily handle the requirements of running most early generation games.

Legality Issues
The legality of emulators and specifically the ROMs, or games, that can be played using emulators is a topic of much discussion. Since emulators require reverse engineering of the original platform to be written they are illegal under United States copyright law. In the past, sites that distribute ROMs or emulators have been subject to legal attacks and have been forced to remove such content.Wired: Nintendo Clone Released, Yanked (February 1, 1999)
