Veterinarian

If you are an animal lover plus have an interest in science then becoming a veterinarian may be something to think about as a career. Veterinarians are basically doctors but for animals – all kinds of animals. They are the first line of help, in some cases the last line, for families trying to help their sick pet.

Like doctors, vets do blood test, take x-rays and do other test in an effort to help an animal when illness strikes. In addition, vets will fix mend and repair broken bones and cover and treat wounds that pets sometimes obtain. They are also responsible for prescribing medication and shots when needed for the pet to heal or to be legal within a city or state.

Vets also help teach pet owners how to feed and train their pets. Often times giving advice to types and kinds of pet foods the pet may need or be required to insure a healthy life.

Many vets specialize in treating small household type animals like dogs, cats and gerbils. Some focus on larger animals like those found on farms (sheep, pigs, horses, cows, etc). Veterinarians that focus on larger animals often times remain mobile, driving to ranches and stables since transporting those larger animals isn’t always possible. Some of those visits may require in assisting an animal give birth. There are other specialists within the veterinarian field that focus wild animals or marine life. These vets will often time work in or directly with a zoo or aquarium.
