A veteran is a person who is or has been working within the armed forces. Many countries throughout the world have traditions and annual holidays to honor and commemorate veterans. In the United States, Veterans Day, also known as Armistice Day, is an annual national holiday that falls on November 11 or the nearest weekday to that date. The holiday marks the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. Veterans Day is set aside as a holiday to honor combat veterans who fought and died for their country.Patriotism: Veterans' Day

There roughly 24 million veterans currently alive in the United States. Almost three out of every four of them has served during a war or an official period of hostility. Approximately 70 million people – about a quarter of the nation's population – are eligible for VA benefits because they are veterans themselves or family members of veterans.
