    A waistcoat in the UK is known as a vest in the U.S. Americans know the common vest as a sleeveless jacket. Vests are often worn as a formal garment and can be part of a three-piece suit.

    Other types of vests are used for various activities. Orange vests may be worn for safety reasons while hunting, life vests are used as flotation devices for water safety, and many law enforcement officers may wear bulletproof vests for protection from gunfire.
