The Verizon Droid is a Motorola cell phone operating on Verizon Wireless's network. The phone runs the Google Android (version 2.0) operating system. The phone is also known as the Motorola Droid and was previously called the Motorola Sholes or the Motorola Tao. Verizon sells another phone under the droid moniker, the HTC Droid Eris.
The Motorola Droid has a 3.7" screen, 5 megapixel camera, and an ARM Cortex 500MHz CPU. Verizon launched the ad campaign Droid Does comparing the new phone to Apple's iPhone prior to the phone's release. The phone was released for sale on November 6, 2009.http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/10/01/motorola-droid-will-be-verizons-android-handset-from-motorola/ http://www.inquisitr.com/43516/droid-release-date/
Some other features of the popular smartphone include Wi-Fi networking, a 3.5 mm standard headphone jack, interchangeable battery and MicroSDHC support with included 16GB card. The phone's touchscreen display contains more than 400,000 total pixels which is twice that of its leading competitor, the iPhone. The processor is a Texas Instruments OMAP 3430 and the phone features a sliding QWERTY keyboard. With the Android version 2.0 operating system is included the free turn-by-turn Google Maps navigation. Unlike many other Motorola phones, the Droid does not run the MOTOBLUR interface, but instead uses the Google Experience skin and application package.http://www.mobilewhack.com/motorola-droid-is-the-first-android-phone-from-verizon-motoblur-not-included/
Motorola Droids are receiving an update to the Android 2.1 operating system. This is the operating system that was launched with Google's Nexus One smartphone in early 2010. The updated OS includes features such as multi-touch with pinch-to-zoom in the browser, gallery and maps applications, voice recognition and keyboard enhancements, Cooliris-enhanced 3D photo galleries, bug fixes, a new music playback application, integrated Google Goggles and some additional enhancements. Adobe Flash 10.1 will also be on the device.http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/10/motorola-details-android-2-1-update-for-droid/
In addition to the Droid and the Droid Eris, on March 15, 2010, Verizon Wireless launches a third Android-based smartphone named the Motorola Devour. The Devour is a mid-range phone with a sliding keyboard, Wi-Fi and 3G mobile broadband. The phone is available to new Verizon subscribers signing on to a two-year service contract. The Devour is a slider phone with a 3.1-inch HVGA (320 by 480 pixel) capacitive touch screen. The phone slides open to a landscape-oriented QWERTY keyboard. A trackpad is located next to the screen. The model will be launched with Android OS 1.6 and standard Google applications. Devour will be Verizon's first model with MotoBlur, which helps integrates social apps such as Facebook and Twitter. An 8GB microSD card is bundled.http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?newsID=16263&news=Motorola+Devour+Google+Android+OS+Verizon+Best+Buy
Motorlola Droid by Verizon Wireless Reviews
The Motorola Droid is the first truly lust-worthy smartphone from Verizon Wireless, and it puts all other Google Android phones to shame. . . . [T]he first Android 2.0 phone is definitely the most advanced and exciting device connecting to Verizon today. — PCMagazine.comhttp://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2354950,00.asp
We're happy to report . . . that after a short adjustment period, typing on the DROID is a reasonable experience. It's not as slick or comfortable as a nice portrait-oriented Tour or (better yet) Bold layount, though it bests the CLIQ, and holds its own against other landscape contenders like the Moment. — Engadget.comhttp://www.engadget.com/2009/10/30/motorola-droid-review/
Droid's 3.7-inch, 854x480 display with an eye-popping pixel density of 267ppi, is the kind of screen you ache for. An analogy: Do you remember how amazing you thought Nintendo 64 games looked ten years ago? Have you looked at them lately? Do you remember the sinking feeling you got, realizing just how ugly they are now? That's how you'll feel looking at every other phone with the now-standard 480x320 screens we thought were so gorgeous a couple of years ago. — Gizmodo.comhttp://gizmodo.com/5396168/motorola-droid-review
