Vera Wang
- American designer Vera Wang was born on June 27, 1949, in New York City. Her parents were affluent Chinese immigrants and she grew up on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, attended the elite Chapin School and the School of American Ballet. Wang competed professionally as figure skater as a teenager, including participating in the 1968 and 1969 U.S. National Championships. While attending Sarah Lawrence College, she spent some time studying abroad at the Sorbonne in Paris, France before graduating with degree in art history.
- After graduating from college in 1971, Wang went to work for Vogue magazine and by the age of 23, she was promoted to senior fashion editor. After working for Vogue in that position for 15 years, Wang left the magazine in 1987 to take a position as design director for accessories at Ralph Lauren.
- In 1984, Wang achieved international attention when she designed a hand-beaded ensemble worn by figure skater Nancy Kerrigan during the 1994 Olympics. Since then, Wang has introduced a line of elegant evening wear, Vera Wang Made to Order and both her bridal and evening apparel are sold at more than 50 upscale retailers across the United States.Biography.com: Vera Wang Bio
