Established in 1932, the Venice Film Festival is the oldest film festival in the world, usually taking place in late August and/or early September.
The festival awards five prizes: The Golden Osella (for technical achievements), the Volpi Cups (for best actor and actress), the Special Jury Prize, the Silver Lion (for the "runner-up"), and the Golden Lion (for the best film at the festival).
Past Golden Lion winners have included Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon, Gillo Pontecorvo's The Battle of Algiers, Louis Malle's Au revior, les enfants and Brokeback Mountain directed by Ang Lee, who also won for Lust, Caution in 2007.
