  • Columbia claims that documents saved on the captured laptop of FARC rebel Raul Reyes show links between FARC and the Venezuelan and Ecuadorian governments.
  • Laptop Background

Raul Reyes was killed on March 1, 2008, during a Columbian military incursion one mile inside Ecuador's territory. According to Columbian police chief Oscar Naranjo, emails found on the laptop indicate that Venezuela gave FARC at least $300 million and show that FARC would support Hugo Chavez if the United States attacked Venezuela. Naranjo also claimed that the documents showed that FARC was trying to buy 50 kilograms of uranium. One email allegedly says Raul Reyes had met with Ecuador's minister of internal security, Gustavo Larrea, an allegation that Ecuador denies. On May 16, 2008, Interpol announced that Colombia had not tampered with the contents of the laptop. Leads from the laptop's files have so far turned up large amounts of cash and uranium around Latin America. Chavez and Ecuador's president Rafael Correa both deny the allegations.
