Van Cliburn

Van Cliburn, is an American pianist. In 1958, at the height of the Cold War, he achieved worldwide recognition by winning the International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow, an event designed to demonstrate Soviet cultural superiority.

Life

Cliburn made his debut at Carnegie Hall at the age of twenty. He retired from public life in 1978, after the deaths of his father and manager. Cliburn has played for every United States President since Harry Truman.
