History
Valparaiso University was founded as the Valparaiso Male and Female College in 1859. The college was forced to close in 1870 due to the Civil War, but then it re-opened in 1873. In 1900, it was renamed to simply Valparasio college, and then in 1906 it became Valparaiso University. Valpo.edu: HistoryMission Statement
