Valerie Harper is an American actress. She was born on August 22, 1940 in Suffern, New York. Harper was raised in the state of Oregon. She attended Hunter College in Manhattan. She married actor Richard Schaal in 1964. Harper had a step-daughter named Wendy Schaal who was an actress as well. Schaal and Harper divorced in 1978. She remarried in 1987 to Tony Cacciotti. They have a daughter together named Cristina. Harper is currently on the national board of directors of the Screen Actors Guild.
Acting Career
Harper began her career in theater in the 1950's. She performed in the shows Take Me Along, Subways Are For Sleeping, Wildcat and The Tale of the Allergist's Wife. In 1970, she landed the role of Rhoda Morgenstern on the television sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Her role continued in 1974 on the spin-off titled Rhoda. From there, she played in The Shadow Box, Don't Go to Sleep, A Friend to Die For, The Office and Dog's Best Friend. Her more recent works include Mary and Rhoda and Dancing at the Harvest Moon.
