Valentine's Day, which was named for St. Valentine, is historically shrouded in mystery. The original St. Valentine is unknown, but there were three historical figures who all martyred themselves, and were later remembered by the church. One popular story tells of a man who went against the edict of the Roman Emperor Claudius II, who believed that married men with families made poor soldiers. Claudius made it a law that no soldier was allowed to take a wife, but Valentine, who was a Catholic priest, married couples in secret.
