  • Welsh Love Spoons

Centuries ago, it was a popular custom for Welsh men to give the object of their desire a carved, wooden spoon adorned with hearts, keys and keyholes. After a hard day's work, young men would sit by the fire carving elaborate patterns into spoons, in hopes that the young woman he planned to gift it to would see the spoon as a stable future in which there would be food on their table and stable family life. In a time when a young man's practical skills foretold the type of work he could acquire and earnings he could gain to care for a family, the more elaborately carved the spoon, the more impressive his proposal would be.Welsh Love Spoons: Lovespoons from Wales

Spoons were adorned with a number of different symbols, all of which have their own special meaning. A heart meant love, while a lock or keyhole suggested protection and security. Elaborate Celtic knotwork which intertwines infinitely was a symbol of eternal or everlasting love.Welsh Love Spoons: Carved Meanings
