A vacuum cleaner, also called vacuum or hoover, is an electrical home appliance that cleans by suction. It is designed to remove dirt and debris into a bag or fixed container.
The first inkling of a vacuum cleaner was invented by Ives W. McGaffney in 1869. He called his invention the "Whirlwind" and it was a manual hand crank mechanism to produce suction and had no brush roller. Melville Bissell, in 1876, is largely credited with the major invention of what we know today as a vacuum cleaner.
Hubert Cecil Booth patented the first powered vacuum cleaner in 1901 and started the British Vacuum cleaner company.
Hoover soon followed in 1908 with their Model O vacuum cleaner. This machine had a cloth bag filter and a variety of attachments.
The vacuum cleaner did not become a commodity until after World War II, and is even now most popular in Western countries. Recent innovations in vacuum techniques include:
- the cyclone technology introduced by Dayson in the 1980's. The cyclone technique ensured vacuum power would remain constant over time, while in the same time eliminating the need for cleaning bags.
- The HEPA anti-dustmite filter cleans out 99,9% of dust-mites, and is easily cleanable. The HEPA filters are often used by many animal owners, as well as asthma and allergy sufferers.
- Robotic vacuum cleaners: Robotic vacuum cleaners move autonomously. Most commonly, they move in a random pattern ("random bounce"). One of the first robotic vacuum cleaner is the iRobot Roomba. http://homesupport.irobot.com/cgi-bin/irobot_homesupport.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=136&p_created=1154461969&pThe Trilobite from Electrolux scans the room using ultrasonic sensors and infrared.http://trilobite.electrolux.com/node217.asp
