UTI - Urinary Tract Infection

  • A urinary tract infection, commonly referred to as a UTI, is a bacterial infection of the urinary system. A UTI may be painful and uncomfortable, or it may be limited to the urinary bladder and present no symptoms at all. Serious consequences may result if the infection spreads to the kidneys.

The bacterium that causes most cases of urinary tract infections is Escherichia coli. However, there are a number of other types of bacteria that can cause an infection as well. The same bacteria that cause UTIs can also inhabit the digestive tract.NIDDK: What I need to know about Urinary Tract Infections
