  • The battleship USS Oklahoma was sunk by Japanese bombers in the attack on Pearl Harbor. During its time as a commissioned battleship, it served as armed escort for allied convoys during World War II, and to President Woodrow Wilson on his visits to France. In 1936, the USS Oklahoma rescued Americans fleeing Spain at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. It was one of the first battleships sunk at the attack of Pearl Harbor. Twenty officers, and 395 enlisted men perished in the attack, however, many of the Oklahoma's crew made their way to the USS Maryland to continue the fight. Following Pearl Harbor, the Oklahoma was stripped and sold for scraps. The ship was to be towed to San Francisco, but sank just 540 miles out of port.
