History of the Song
The song Papers is a buzz single from Usher’s 6th studio album Raymond v. Raymond. The song, written by Usher, Sean Garrett, Alonzo Mathis and Zayton peaked at #31 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped Hot R&B / Hip Hop Songs. This makes “Papers” Usher’s 10th #1 song on the chart. The song came out in the middle of Usher’s divorce. Although the song was not originally written with his divorce in mind, it did become a reality in the end. The song spent a total of 16 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 charts after its debut in the week of October 31, 2009.
The original title of the song was not “Papers”, but “Filing Papers”. This was before there was any news about Usher’s marriage. According to Garrett, one of the song writers, he said he “I wrote a record for Usher three or four months ago where I really didn't have any idea of what he was going through personally.
In an interview with MTV News, Usher Raymond, during his promotional campaign for the album “Raymond v. Raymond” Usher said “When the song was recorded, I wasn’t divorced. It was some reality in the contrast of trying to make it all work, having to balance a career and having a normal life…. I felt that in a way, the story did touch on certain things at the time. I didn’t know how realistic it would become. I didn’t know I would become divorced…. The song spoke to that place. Unfortunately, it did become a reality.” Of its appeal, Garrett compared it to “Yeah!”, the 2004 hit by Usher Raymond.
