    On August 16, 2009, Usain also beat his own record in the 100-meter sprint with a time of 9.58 seconds at the same competition.     Usain Bolt easily broke his own record on August 16, 2008, while competing in the same event in the 2008 Summer Olympics with a time of 9.69 seconds.

    August 16, 2009: Bolt broke the 100-meter world record with a time of 9.58 seconds at the world championship in Berlin.

  • Athletics Career

    Bolt began competing in track and field internationally in 2002 and took home gold medals at the IAAF/Coca Cola World Junior Championshipsin the 200 meter event and at the Central American and Caribbean Youth Championships in the 200 and 400 meter events. He competed in the 2004 Summer Olympics, but finished the 200 meter event in fifth place. Also in 2004, Bolt broke the world junior record for the 200 meter sprint at 19.93 seconds. He competed with the Jamaican team at the IAAF World Championships in 2005, finishing last, and again in 2007, earning a silver medal.

    On April 12, 2009, Usain was quoted in a German newspaper saying "When you're a child in Jamaica you learn how to roll a joint."
