The United States competed for a total of 16 gymnastics medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. The events are divided into three categories: artistic, rhythmic and trampoline. The U.S. team won 10 medals in the artistic portion of the events. Female gymnasts Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson each won a gold medal and led all athletes in overall medals, winning five and four respectively. Paul Hamm's twin brother, Morgan Hamm, announced on August 7, 2008, that he too would be withdrawing from the events with a broken ankle.
