The US Embassy in Iraq officially opened January 5, 2009. It is the largest United States embassy in the world. The US had previously been using former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein's old palace as its base of operations. Embassy Mission and Services
The new embassy is a legal requirement now that the U.S. government has handed over certain essential functions to the Iraqi government as stated in the Iraq security pact.
