Unsolved Mysteries

  • Unsolved Mysteries is a reality series which focuses on paranormal cases such as UFO sightings as well as criminal cases. The show is documentary-like in its form. It originally ran on the NBC network from 1987 until 1997. Robert Stack is the most recognizable host from those years. His voice and the show's theme music are well known trademarks of the series.

Each episode focuses on different stories and the actual people involved in the case are usually portrayed by actors. Sometimes the people involved in each event are featured in interviews for dramatization purposes. When the show originally aired, sometimes a phone number would be displayed on screen for viewers to call in with information to help solve the mystery. Viewers also received updates on stories when applicable.

Unsolved Mysteries first aired January 20, 1987, on NBC. After its stint on NBC the show moved to CBS from 1997 until 1999. Robert Stack was joined by co-host Virginia Madsen. Ratings declined and once again the show moved, this time to the Lifetime Network where it remained from 2001 to 2002.

The Spike network will begin airing an updated version of the series in Fall 2008. The show is getting an entire makeover including a new set, new host and new stories. Some of the older stories will be touched upon to give viewers updates. Spike will air the series for five years and a total of 175 episodes.
