Founded in 1994 by James Lavelle and Tim Goldsworthy, UNKLE is an experimental hip-hop outfit that set the stage for the downtempo breakbeat sound that became known as "trip-hop" in the mid-90s. Since the group's inception, members have come and gone with Lavelle remaining the only constant.
At the height of their popularity, Lavelle drafted producer DJ Shadow into the fold and collaborated with such notable artists as Thom Yorke, Mike D of the Beastie Boys and Badly Drawn Boy to produce 1998's Psyence Fiction with its well-known single and Jonathan Glazer-directed video "Rabbit in Your Headlights."
Since that time, UNKLE has released dozens of EPs, LPs and remixes for such artists as Beck, Blur, Radiohead and Metallica.
