University History
The school was originally founded in 1931 as Tampa Junior College. It held classes in a local high school until 1933, when it moved to its own location and officially became the University of Tampa. The football team was also established that same year, but was discontinued in 1974. The school went through financial troubles during the 1990s, but was able to recover, partly from donations totaling $38 million from businessman John Sykes.St. Petersburg Times: University of Tampa Lands $28-million Gift (January 28, 2000) -
