  • History

In 1949, the charter to create a Catholic university in San Diego was granted. The first college, founded in 1952 by Mother Rosalie Hill, superior vicar of the Society of the Sacred Heart, was the San Diego College for Women. In 1954, Reverend Charles F. Buddy, first bishop of the Diocese of San Diego, founded San Diego University. The two religious leaders envisioned a united university and when a directive from the Second Vatican Council encouraged unity, the two schools merged in 1972 to become the University of San Diego.University of San Diego: History
