In 1848, the Baptist Association of western New York intended to move Colgate University from the nearby town of Hamilton to the city of Rochester. But dissenting faculty and students halted the move with legal action and in 1850, the University of Rochester was founded. The school started with sixty students. In 1900, women were admitted to the university as a result of pressure from Susan B. Anthony and Helen Barrett Montgomery.University of Rochester: History
