After hearing an announcement that President Barack Obama may give the commencement address and receive an honorary degree on May 17, 2009, many of the priests objected because of Obama's pro-choice stance on abortion rights and stem cell research. If President Obama did receive the honorary degree, he would be the 9th President to do so.ChicagoTribune.com: 10 Holy Cross Priests Object To Obama Invitation (April 8, 2009)

The school was founded by the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1842 as a male-only university. In 1972, the first female graduated after transferring from nearby St. Mary's College. There are six undergraduate schools: College of Arts and Letters, College of Science, School of Architecture, Law School, College of Engineering and the Mendoza College of Business. Among the well-known alumni of the school are Condoleeza Rice, Regis Philbin, Jim Wetherbee, Phil Donahue, Hannah Storm and Mark Shields.
Touchdown Jesus
Among the famous sites on campus is the main hall that contains the 'Golden Dome', the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, and Notre Dame Stadium, also known as 'The House that Knute Rockne Built', including the mural of Jesus raising his arms on the nearby Hesburgh Library that is commonly referred to as 'Touchdown Jesus'. The school is known for its athletic programs, most notably their football team. They've won 11 national championships and have produced more members of the College Football Hall of Fame than any other college football team.College Football Hall of Fame: List of Notre Dame Inductees
