  • Hurricane Katrina

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina caused considerable damage to the University. The main campus is located on high ground and most of the damage was caused by winds and rain-driven-water. Bienville Hall dormitories, the Lafitte Village couples apartments and the engineering building suffered first floor flooding due to a breach in the levee on the London Avenue Canal, just a few blocks south of the main campus.

UNO was used as an evacuation shelter and meeting area by the National Guard.
