The University of Michigan is a public institution dedicated to high-level education and research. It is the oldest university in the state and currently has three campuses: Ann Arbor, Flint and Dearborn. The school was originally founded in the city of Detroit in 1817, but moved to Ann Arbor in 1837 and held its first classes there in 1841. Several new buildings were added in the early 1900s, including a hospital, a library and Hill Auditorium.
