The University of Memphis is a public, four year research university. It is one of three doctoral granting institutions in the state.
University History
The school was originally founded in 1909 as the West Tennessee State Normal School. The first classes were held in 1912. The school later changed its name, in 1941, to Memphis State College. It was officially designated a full university by the state of Tennessee in 1957. The college changed named again in 1994, officially becoming the University of Memphis.

Shooting
On September 30, 2007, University of Memphis student Taylor Bradford was shot and killed on the university campus. Bradford played for the Memphis Tigers football team. Three men were later arrested in connection with the murder.
