  • University History

The University of Maryland was originally founded on March 6, 1856, as Maryland Agricultural College. The school officially opened on October 6, 1859, with 34 students in the inaugural class. Following the U.S. Civil War, the college was forced to file bankruptcy and served as a boy's preparatory school from 1864 to 1866. The state of Maryland then purchased partial ownership of the college, making it a state institution in February of 1866. After a fire in 1912 destroyed the majority of the school's buildings, the state of Maryland took over full control of the school. The state later renamed the school Maryland State College in 1916. Four years later, it became the University of Maryland.
