University History
The school was originally founded in 1909 as the Washington Normal School. It offered teaching degrees exclusively, and still did so in 1943 when it accepted students from the Aroostook State Normal School during World War II. In 1968, the University of Maine system was established, and the school was renamed the University of Maine at Machias when it was absorbed. -
