    The school was originally founded in 1864 as the Western State Normal School. At the time, it was the first public institution of higher education in the state of Maine. It ran independently until 1968, when it merged with the University of Maine system. The school's name changed at the same time, to officially become the University of Maine at Farmington. It added its liberal arts program in 1971, becoming a founding member of The Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges.Official Site: UMF Facts
