University History
The school was founded in 1862 as the Maine College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts. It opened six years later, in 1868, with 12 students. The school was free until 1879, with students performing 15 labor hours each week rather than paying tuition. The university assumed its current name of the University of Maine in 1968. Most recently, in 2004, the university was accepted into the National Sea Grant College Program. -
