    The University of Illinois at Chicago began as several private health colleges founded during the late 19th century. The Chicago College of Pharmacy opened in 1859, the College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1882 and the Columbian College of Dentistry in 1891. The university would go through several consolidations throughout the years until finally reaching its current name, University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) in 1982.UIC: History
