The University of Delaware is a four-year institution of higher education. The school's sports teams are part of the Colonial Athletic Association.
University History
The school was originally founded in 1743 as the Free School in Pennsylvania. In 1834, Newark College opened, which merged with the original Free School in 1843 to form the University of Delaware. The institution was forced to close for nearly 11 years starting in 1859, then reopened in 1870. A separate women's college opened nearby in the 1910s, which eventually merged with the main college in 1945. Around that same time, the college added schools of arts and sciences, education, agriculture and engineering. The school has continued to expand in the years since, undergoing major renovations and adding degree programs. The current university offers over 100 different degree programs to nearly 20,000 students each year on a total of five suburban campuses throughout Delaware.
